Cheruthoni Dam
Cheruthoni Dam is a significant hydroelectric dam located in Idukki district, Kerala, and forms an integral part of the famous Idukki Hydroelectric Project. Built across the Cheruthoni River, a tributary of the Periyar River, the dam plays a vital role in power generation and water management in the state.
The dam is known for its massive concrete structure and is situated close to the Idukki Arch Dam and Kulamavu Dam. Together, these dams create the Idukki reservoir, one of the largest in Kerala. Cheruthoni Dam also features spillway shutters that are occasionally opened during heavy monsoon rains, attracting visitors due to the impressive water release.
Surrounded by hills and greenery, Cheruthoni Dam offers a scenic environment and is a popular viewpoint for tourists visiting Idukki. The area highlights both the engineering excellence and natural beauty of the region.
